I guess we're catering to a very different set of users to the usual clusters.

A fair proportion of our 500+ academics have very little IT experience 
(including people who have never used the command line before, even on 
Windows) and so we need to be able to make them feel that they've got a 
reasonable chance of running jobs and with pages and pages of blocked jobs 
from just one or two users being all they feel they see it's very easy for 
them to think they don't have a hope of getting their code to run.

I can quite understand that! :-)

Ahh, interesting, that's not shown by showq --help so I wasn't aware it 
existed.

I wonder if it could be done as a build time option ?
